Sloths: The Monks of the Animal World

Calm, slow and at peace with the world. They are two kinds of sloths, three and two toed. They have a very slow metabolism. Most arboreal animals are very fast, flitting from tree to tree if they are birds, or jumping from branch to branch like monkeys. But the sloth's survival depends on an exactly opposite evolution. It is excruciatingly slow. This is because it remains quiet and hidden out of sight and attention. This makes life easier, and also evades its natural predators like the leopard and the jaguar.

Evening Star

This is how I imagine the personification of the evening star to be. A young and beauteous lady, who has bright eyes and chestnut hair, whose beauty lies in her naturalness and personality. I have made this portrait with shading pencils and I have been making her for quite a few weeks now. She wouldn't have taken much time, but I decided to make her slowly.

Limericks

There was a man with a car
Who wanted to go real far
He took leave of his wife,
Sick and tired of his life
And went next door to the bar.

In the city of Dilli
There was a cat called Billi
She wanted to say ciao
But managed only Miao
A cat that can talk, how silly

Death trap

The Death trap

Hi everybody!

Let me tell you what happened today.
I like photography and so I go out on bird walks with my dad. This fine morning, he woke up early at 6 o’clock. He woke me up too and called me to get ready. Wiping my eyes, I stared at the wall clock. “It’s only 6! Can’t I sleep a little longer?” I moaned. “No. Don’t you want to go out with me? Birding is for early birds. Now get up,” He said. I got ready and went off to the lakeside with him.

It was cool and a light breeze blew. The sun had hardly come out and it was cloudy too. There were trees all around and the greenery soothed my eyes. I gave dad some tea from the flask that we had brought.  We decided to walk along the lakeside and scan it for birds. I spotted some small birds and asked dad which ones they were. He said that the ones sitting on the rocks were river terns. I clicked a few photos of them and then we moved on.

River tern

Walking by the side, rather crouching because we didn’t want the birds to see us, dad pointed out to a long stick that was put in the ground. There was another stick of nearly the same length standing with the help of rocks some four or five meters apart. I thought this was odd. We decided to go near and check it out.  The both of us walked till there slowly and when we reached there we saw a very strange thing. The sticks that were standing some meters apart were joined by a long and thin rope which was white and dirty. Hanging from that rope were various ropes of different lengths ending with a noose that would remind anybody of the gallows. I was perplexed at first, but understood what it was when dad explained it to me.

Shore birds and waders such as plovers, stilts and shanks come to feed upon them and they are usually found at such places. They come feeding, and when they come too near their long stick-like legs get stuck in the noose. Even so, their leg can be taken out, but when the bird tries to pull its leg, the noose tightens itself and become small. So the harder the bird pulls, the tighter it becomes, and the more difficult it gets for the bird to free itself.

“So it is a bird trap?” I ask.

“Yes,” My father replies.

“But one thing that I don’t quite get, is that why someone would like to catch such a harmless and innocent bird,” I say.

“It is very simple my dear. Villagers from nearby villages come to these forests and disturb the wildlife with their activities. The graze their cows, collect firewood and timber, clear natural vegetation and disturb wildlife. The trap that you just saw set up here is for someone’s meal. After the bird is caught, whoever has set up this trap will come and take it away. He will cook it up and eat it. Not only are these birds, but francolins and partridges also targeted for their meat.” He took a brief pause and continued. “Let’s take this death trap out before anybody sees us and any bird is caught.”

We pulled the sticks, gathered all the ropes, put them in the car and went back home after some photography.

What I want to really say is that we humans must not disturb and kill wildlife for our greedy needs. Many times when I go on such walks I admire nature’s beauty and all that it has given us. But then when I find a plastic manja in a tree or a plastic bottle lying around I think that we are using our Earth’s resources but are not giving back. It really makes me think, do we deserve everything we have?

Creativity is Intelligence having Fun!

I recently read a thought of Einstein's. I felt that it was nice, so I doodled it away! Einstein really looks like a jolly, amiable old fellow.

Death

I often wonder if death is always so mysterious. It comes in so many ways, so many forms, that imagining it to happen is rather impossible for a young and inexperienced mind like mine. To see it then, in a humanoid form as millions of people over the millennia have imagined, is hard too. People fancy death as a haggard, veiled figure; black and incomprehensible, with a scythe in it's long bony arms. They dread it. But that is too dreamy for my taste. Death is nothing but a process for some, and instant death, although not a process, is surely an end to all worries, joys and lives. Death is grievous too most, but for some it acts as a relief, a full stop for long-endured pain and suffering. There the question arises, as to whether death is good or bad. In my opinion, it is neither, because it doesn't distinguish between the rich and the poor, healthy or ailing, old or young. That's the beauty of death, so solemn, haunting, wise and yet absolutely necessary.

IT'S MY BIRTHDAY !!!

Hello everyone!
Guess what today is... It's my birthday! And it is APJ Abdul Kalam sir's Birthday too!
After waiting for an entire year for this day, here it finally is. And I had a lot of fun at school today too. The usual custom at our school is that children wear their birthday dresses and distribute something in their classes. It usually is pens, chocolates or sweets.

But I think pens, chocolates, and
sweets are something, everyone

does, and I'm not like everyone, otherwise, I wouldn't be writing this blog, right? So I sat brainstorming alone at night and came up with a brilliant idea that everyone at home and school loved.
 My class teacher said it
was a very thoughtful gift to give.

White daisy seed Pots

Instead of giving away all those things, I decided to do something for the environment. Mum ordered 50 recycled black plant pots, and we kept 4 white daisy seeds in each of them. I thought that it would be a really nice thing to give away white daisy seeds to my friends and teachers. They'll go and plant it at home, and maybe when the flowers will come they will remember me?

Whoever celebrates their birthday, their kid's birthday or any of their family's, please consider this idea to give away and make the earth green!

When Raindrops Fall

I like the monsoon, so I pen down my thoughts in the form of this poem. Do tell me your memories about rain, and about what you think of this poem and the watercolor about a rural scene in the rain!

Merida from Brave

Merida is one princess I can identify with. She is courageous and does not fear to say her mind. I like her personality a lot so I sketched her according to my imagination because she has unrealistic proportions in the movie. I wanted to make her look realistic, so enjoy!

PS- She also turned her mum into a bear. Good idea !

Indus valley poster

The Indus Valley Civilization

The Indus valley civilization was an early civilization with great drainage systems and wonderful craftsmen. They had a script of various different symbols which, till date, nobody has deciphered. I sure wish they do it quickly. Who knows, some one might've written an ancient story? This is a poster I made for my class . Have fun !
