Famous Paintings I Like

When I say the word 'famous painting', what comes into your mind?

The Mona Lisa by Da Vinci?

The Creation of Adam by Michelangelo?

Or, The Scream by Edvard Munch?

Here are a few famous paintings I adore.

Girl With a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer

A truly captivating painting, this portrait of an unknown girl appeals to many eyes across the globe. It is impossible to determine whether she is turning away from you or towards you, but her slightly parted lips give away her emotion. The portrait is named after the large pearl earing she is wearing, though on closer inspection, it seems to be just a blob of white paint, which illustrates Vermeer's illusionary and artistic abilities.

The Elephants by Salvador Dali

Known for his intelligence and surrealistic art style, Salvador Dali is the artist of this unconventional painting. The two elephants in the landscape painting represent the future and are also symbols of strength. The most noticeable thing about them would be their long, multi-jointed legs that resemble those of a spider's, but not many would notice the phallic representation of the stone obelisks on their backs which seem to float and are symbolic of power and domination against the dreary and mostly barren landscape.

Ship with Butterfly Sails by Salvador Dali

Another one of his surrealistic scapes, Ship with Butterfly Sails by Dali is an excellent example of beautiful surrealism. The clouds in the painting swirl loosely, and the vibrant colors of the butterfly wings contrast with the bright blue sea or the rocky ground. It highlights one of the main ideas or themes of Surrealism: Juxtaposition.

The Perception of Art

The first and foremost thing people misunderstand about art is when they think that one thing is art, and the other thing isn't. Let me clear away that misconception for you.

A five-year-old blissfully scribbling away a doodle on a piece of paper, and a master artist painstakingly making a detailed portrait are both examples of art, and some people might be tended to put away the toddler's drawing as something that shouldn't be paid attention to (except parents who would stick it to the refrigerator), according to me show a wonderful sort of insight about various things. But people usually pay attention to the works of an adult, which is why so many paintings from famous artists have so much market value.

Art is expression.

There is no set definition to it. It is an expression done by the conscious mind, and therefore any such expression is to be considered art. One of my cousin-sisters made a tiny bookmark for me; It has an orange rabbit drawn by pencil holding an even more orange-colored carrot. I keep it in one of my Charles Dickens novels. That is an example of art, and so is The Starry Night by Van Gogh. By no means am I comparing the two, however, what I mean to say is that expression has tons of different ways to be shown, and each one means an entirely different thing to each person.

Death

I often wonder if death is always so mysterious. It comes in so many ways, so many forms, that imagining it to happen is rather impossible for a young and inexperienced mind like mine. To see it then, in a humanoid form as millions of people over the millennia have imagined, is hard too. People fancy death as a haggard, veiled figure; black and incomprehensible, with a scythe in it's long bony arms. They dread it. But that is too dreamy for my taste. Death is nothing but a process for some, and instant death, although not a process, is surely an end to all worries, joys and lives. Death is grievous too most, but for some it acts as a relief, a full stop for long-endured pain and suffering. There the question arises, as to whether death is good or bad. In my opinion, it is neither, because it doesn't distinguish between the rich and the poor, healthy or ailing, old or young. That's the beauty of death, so solemn, haunting, wise and yet absolutely necessary.
